We have made a visit to Thames Water recently to inform them about Hydrocitizenship project and also learn more about their role in Walthamstow Wetlands. Walthamstow Wetlands is a £6.5m project to open up the largest purpose-built water body in London to the public. The reservoirs are owned by Thames Water and Waltham Forest Council and the main delivery partner of the project if London Wildlife Trust.
The aim is to redefine Walthamstow Reservoirs as a distinctive urban wetland nature reserve and create a special heritage asset which becomes a valued part of the cultural, social, economic and environmental life. Therefore, managing different user groups comes as one of the challenges. For example, there has been some suggestions to move the fisheries to the northern reservoirs from the middle one but Thames Water thinks that fishing is primary to the project and even though it doesn’t make money it is important to keep them on the middle reservoir and make the area as much as a multi-use site.
Especially in fragile and operational sites like Walthamstow Wetlands managing access emerges as a very important issue. Lee Valley team is considering Walthamstow Wetlands as a potential case study area and planning to take further steps to engage with other stakeholders and community in the area.
